It’s that time of year again. Time to start fall breeding. This week we are gathering all the fall-calving cows and sorting them into their breeding pastures. I love to see the calves at this age. They are fun and frisky and full of energy.

Which can lead to some rather exciting cattle drives if a baby suddenly decides to turn back and head for the hills. I always hold my breath until the last baby walks out the gate. (Or in the gate…whichever way you’re headed.) And on more than one occasion we have headed out to gather a pasture of pairs with only pickups and 4-wheelers only to return twenty minutes later to saddle a horse. “We should have had a horse in the first place,” we always decide after the fact. But this year, we were proactive!

We took a horse and everything went just fine. I just hope we can remember to do that every time…
Have a great day!
